Princeton Battle Monument
55 Stockton St, Princeton, NJ 08540, US
The Princeton Battle Monument commemorates George Washington's victory while suffering the loss of General Hugh Mercer. The monument is 50 feet tall and was designed by Frederick MacMonnies and Thomas Hastings. Both the monument and the park are part of the City Beautiful Movement in New Jersey.
The monument was fully erected and completed in 1922. In 2007, nighttime illumination was added to the monument after planning it for more than 80 years.
Inscribed at the rear face of the monument:
"Here memory lingers to recall the guiding mind,
Whose daring plan outflanked the foe and turned dismay to hope,
When Washington, with swift resolve, marched through the night,
To fight at dawn and venture all in one victorious battle for our freedom."
