Covenhoven House
150 West Main Street Freehold, NJ 07728, US
The Covenhoven House at Monmouth County, New Jersey is an American heritage from the Revolutionary War era. It was built from 1752-1753 by William and Elizabeth Covenhoven. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places back in 1974 because of the role it played during the war for independence.
The house was chosen by British General Henry Clinton as his temporary shelter during his march from Philadelphia to New York. He stayed in this house for 36 hours. It was the last place Clinton stayed before the upcoming battle of Monmouth.
