Cherokee Historical and Preservation Society
The Cherokee Historical and Preservation Society, Inc. was formed in 1969 by a group of citizens concerned about the rapid loss of Cherokee County’s historical heritage to development and progress. In 1971, the S.C. Appalachian Council of Governments conducted a study into the region’s historical sites. Out of 43 sites identified in Cherokee County, only 27 remained. The group consists of over two-hundred members and has taken great strides to educate the public about the significance of the county’s numerous historical sites and to preserve historic sites.
