During World War II women from every background took jobs in war production industries across the country. Collectively nicknamed “Rosie the Riveter,” these women helped build ships, tanks, planes and munitions of every size for the Allied armed forces. Women were inspired to take these jobs based on economic need and patriotic feelings. Locally, more than 8,000 women worked in the Boston Navy Yard as welders, painters, machinists, clerks, electrician’s helpers, and more. .
This two-day celebration explores and celebrates the work these “Rosie the Riveters” did during World War II and the legacy they pass down to us today.
