Party like it’s the 20s and celebrate the ‘Charleston,’ the defining song and dance of the 1920s created by New Brunswick’s own James P. Johnson.

The East Jersey Old Town Village will host Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra, who will recreate the looks and sounds of the 1920s while performing popular jazz music of the period. The Canarsie Wobblers will hold dance lessons illustrating the proper steps of 20s music, including the Charleston. And powerful vocalist, Risa Branch.

Visitors can spend the entire day listening to outstanding music, exploring the Village, and enjoying food and beverages from various vendors. We hope you’ll wear your best 1920s attire!

The Roaring 20s Jazz Party will honor African American Musician James P. Johnson. Born in New Brunswick, Johnson became the Jazz Age’s leading composer and pianist, greatly influencing early ragtime and jazz music. He composed the quintessential song of the 1920s, the Charleston, which debuted on Broadway in 1923.
