The Friends of Marlborough Public Library are pleased to announce the next program of the Friends 2015-2016 Season –their 46th Year-on Wednesday, February 10th at 7 PM as they present “Give ‘Em Hell, Harry-the Biggest Presidential Election Upset” with Dr. Gary Hylander, lecturer. This is the fourth program of the “2015-2016 Special Program Series” chaired by Peggy Ayres.
With this year being a presidential election year, let’s revisit one of the most exciting elections in American History. The 1948 “whistle-stop” election was the first presidential election after the war and the first since Roosevelt’s death. The election of 1948 still commands the imagination of the nation. A feisty Truman ran and won a fabled upset victory over Governor Thomas Dewey. On the morning after the election a grinning Truman held over his head for all to see the headline of the Chicago Tribune “Dewey Defeats Truman”.
Dr. Gary Hylander earned his Ph.D. at Boston College. His advisor and dissertation director was noted Boston historian Thomas H. O’Connor. A retired college professor, Dr. Hylander is currently an independent scholar who specializes as a presidential historian and pedagogical specialist for the NEH. Dr. Hylander is a frequent lecturer at library forums, historical societies, senior centers and professional organizations and has appeared several times in the Friends Special Program Series.
This program will take place in the Bigelow Auditorium at Marlborough Public Library located at 35 West Main Street, Marlborough. Admission is free and open to the public and the auditorium is fully handicapped accessible.
This program is funded and sponsored in part by the Ezra Cutting Trust-Bank of America Trustee, the Marlborough Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, The Friends Memorial Fund, a gift from the Cummings Foundation in honor of Ginger Ryan and the Brigham Family Trust.
