Gardens Throughout Virginia History

Growing flowers has only a slightly less ancient pedigree in Virginia than agriculture. This program gives a quick survey across four centuries of the chief influences on gardening in the Old Dominion. It will outline historic shifts in agriculture but focus mainly on the development of gardening as ornament, which grew side-by-side with cultivation of the land for food. The program will employ items from the VHS collection to highlight the writings and landscape work of authoritative contributors to the practice of gardening.
