Presented by
Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum
Sandra Chatelle, President of the Rhode Island Spinners Guild and fiber expert, will be demonstrating the process of spinning flax fibers into linen in the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace’s lower level snuff mill.
Flax and linen were indispensable parts of 18th century colonial life and was the dominant material for thread and textiles.
The skills and techniques involved in spinning this plant fiber are somewhat different than those involved in animal fibers like wool. Flax fibers are longer, with no stretch or resiliency, but the resulting material is lighter and more durable than cotton and soothing to the skin.
Sandra will be demonstrating the techniques involved in spinning flax, explaining the processes involved, and guiding interested visitors in trying it out themselves!
