Family Day: Celebrating 300 Years of the Southermost School

Sunday, September 14 | 2:00–4:00 PM | Portsmouth Historical Society

Join us in celebrating the 300th anniversary of the Southermost School — completed in 1725 and recognized as the oldest one-room schoolhouse in New England and arguably the oldest in the nation.  Step back in time and meet Adam Lawton, the builder, and James Preston, the first schoolmaster.  Hear from Gloria Schmidt, author of Portsmouth History Notes, to learn more about the history of Southermost School.  Kids can have a lesson in the school or make a colonial toy.  Tours of the museum will be offered.

Come explore Portsmouth’s educational history, enjoy a free family-friendly afternoon, and help us honor this remarkable 300-year milestone.  870 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.
