New Hampshire Historical Society
Join us for a special day at John Hay’s historic New Hampshire estate, The Fells, overlooking scenic Lake Sunapee. Lincoln’s private secretary during the Civil War and a respected diplomat and journalist, Hay used The Fells as a retreat in the late 1800s. This special daylong excursion will include tours of the house and gardens, lunch, and a talk by historian Philip McFarland about his recently published book, John Hay, Friend of Giants: The Man and Life Connecting Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, Henry James, and Theodore Roosevelt (2017). A hardcover copy of the book is included in the registration fee, and McFarland will be available to sign copies. After the talk, we will be embarking on a narrated cruise of Lake Sunapee.
Please note that accessibility is limited for those with mobility issues. All guests should be comfortable walking unassisted for a mile or two at a leisurely pace.
Registration deadline is September 8.
The registration fee for New Hampshire Historical Society members is $100. Nonmembers are welcome to join the group with a registration fee of $150, which includes a one-year Society membership.
The registration fee for this event includes admittance to The Fells; guided tours of the house and grounds; lunch; a hardcover copy of McFarland's book John Hay, Friend of Giants; McFarland's talk, and the narrated cruise of Lake Sunapee.
