During the American Revolution, French support played a pivotal role in securing American independence from British rule. Motivated by a desire to weaken their longtime rival, Britain, and inspired by the ideals of liberty espoused by the American cause, France provided critical military assistance, financial aid, and naval support to the Continental Army under General George Washington. The success of the American Revolution inspired the French Revolution by demonstrating the possibility of overthrowing monarchy and establishing democratic governance based on principles of liberty, equality, and popular sovereignty.
