Speaker John Roman, contemporary map illustrator and author of The Art of Illustrated Maps (2015 Simon & Schuster /HOW Books), will discuss the popular, historic city- and town-view panoramic maps of the 1800s . . . with particular attention on Edwin Whitefield’s 1876 perspective view of Dedham, Mass. The evolution and process of the 19th-century’s bird’s-eye-view industry will be explored, as will Whitefield’s prolific career (1816-1892) as a landscape painter, architectural illustrator, botanical artist, and lithographer. Whitefield’s legacy of recording the charm of daily life in his art and maps will be honored though this pictorial presentation.

The April talk is preceded by the Dedham Museum & Archive’s Annual Meeting at 6:00 p.m. Members are invited and all are welcome. The talk will begin at 7:00 p.m., as usual.
