CSRHC Family Treasures Workshop

On Saturday, February 22 the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center will host a Family Treasures Workshop for the public. The workshop will be held in the J.E. & L.E. Mabee Foundation Temporary Exhibit Gallery. In the morning session attendees will learn how to care for textiles. In the afternoon the public is invited to bring in a treasured item and receive advice from the Heritage Center’s curatorial experts on how to care for that particular item.

The morning workshop to be held from 10 a.m. – noon will be led by Jill A. Holt, a former textile collection curator for the Oklahoma Historical Society. Attendees are asked to bring cloth items such as quilts, lace or clothing from their family heirlooms and Holt will help them find ways to preserve them.

“Ask the Curator” and get some great collections care advice from Dave Kennedy, Curator of Collections and Aaron Preston, Archivist on the best way to care for a family treasure. Each attendee is asked to bring one item for the experts to examine.

The Family Treasures Workshop is being hosted in conjunction with the Caring for Family Treasures traveling exhibit that will be on display at the Heritage Center February 18-22. The exhibit provides a public service to help individuals learn how to take care of their family heirlooms. This colorful exhibit consists of 12 sections, including specific information on caring for glass and ceramics, photographs, recordings, organic materials such as baskets, feathers, and leather, and other items.
