Confederate Monuments and the Memory of Slavery: A Discussion with Historian Kevin Levin

The Southern Poverty Law Center estimates that there are more than 700 Confederate monuments in America's public spaces, along with hundreds of schools, streets, and communities named for Confederate icons.

Historian, educator, and author Kevin Levin has blogged at Civil War memory for more than a decade. He will discuss the historical origins of these monuments -- their connection to "Lost Cause" remembrance of the Civil War and the Jim Crow era of the 20th century -- and how the divisive current debate over their future connects to our nation's memory of slavery.

Admission is free for Royall House and Slave Quarters members, and $10 for all others. The $10 non-member admission fee may be put toward the cost of an annual membership at the event.

The Royall House and Slave Quarters museum is located at 15 George Street in Medford, Massachusetts, just outside of Medford Square, near the intersection with Main Street and next to Royall Park.

By car: Route 93 to exit 32. West on Route 60 to second light (Medford Square). Turn left onto Main Street. Bear right at Mobil Station to stay on Main Street and proceed to blinking yellow light. Turn right onto George Street, and park on the right past the bus stop.

Public transportation: MBTA Buses 96 from Harvard Square and 101 between Sullivan Square and Malden Station stop at the corner of Main and George Streets.
