Lake Winnipesaukee Museum is hosting a presentation, “Captain Leander Lavallee and the Governor Endicott”
Leander Lavallee was one of the most famous and beloved steamboat captains on Lake Winnipesaukee. Lavallee owned some of the most important steamboats on the lake, including the Governor Endicott, the Uncle Sam mail boat, the Marshal Foch, the SS Mt. Washington and the SS Mt. Washington II. David Warren will present an historical look at the steam ship “Governor Endicott”. Warren, through his research will discuss Lavallee’s career and connection to others in the steamboat business as well as his time on the lake. The Steamship, the “Governor Endicott” was Leander Lavallee’s first big command on Winnipesaukee and will be a highlight of this lecture. In addition a scale model of the boat will be on display as he speaks about the “Governor Endicott”.
David Warren’s interest in Winnipesaukee steamboat history stems from his 60 year ship modeling hobby. Models on exhibit at local museums include the Lady of the Lake, the Chocorua and the SS Mt. Washington at the NH Boat Museum, 3 destroyers, 2 aircraft carriers, and oil tanker and a diorama of the Bath Ironworks shipyard at the Wright Museum, and the mail boat Uncle Sam, the Chateaugay, the SS Mt. Washington II, and now the Governor Endicott here at the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum. His current project is a large scale cutaway model of the James Bell. Articles about his work have appeared in Classic Country Life magazine, the Union Leader, the Weirs Times, the Laconia Citizen, the Baysider and the Boathouse News. David also writes articles for the Weirs Times and the Boathouse News, and speaks throughout the lakes region about our steamboat history. He lives in Melvin Village and Mirror Lake with his wife Rae Lynn.
