Portsmouth Historical Society to Host Lecture on British Deserters in the American Revolution June 19 at 6:30 pm
PORTSMOUTH, RI – On Thursday, June 19, at 6:30 p.m., the Bert Quist Lecture Series—sponsored by the Battle of Rhode Island Association and the Portsmouth Historical Society—will feature noted author and historian Don N. Hagist. The evesnt will take place at the Portsmouth Friends Meeting Houe ChurchH, 11 Middle Rd,. Portsmouth, RI.
Mr. Hagist will present a talk titled “British Deserters from the Rhode Island Garrison,” focusing on the soldiers who deserted the British Army during its occupation of Rhode Island during the American Revolution. The presentation will explore who these men were, why they chose to desert, and what ultimately became of them.
Don N. Hagist is the managing editor of the Journal of the American Revolution and an independent researcher specializing in the British Army’s demographics and material culture during the Revolutionary War. He is the author of several historical works, including The Revolution’s Last Men, British Soldiers, American War, and Wives, Slaves and Servant Girls. He also maintains a blog on British common soldiers at http://redcoat76.blogspot.com.
Prior to the lecture, the Portsmouth Historical Society will present its annual scholarship to a graduating Portsmouth High School senior.
This event is free and open to the public. No registration is required. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early, as seating is limited.
