“Aquidneck Island Trolleys” Lecture at the Historical Society on Oct 24th

Fresh off the Portsmouth Historical Society’s historic trolley tour, Portsmouth Town Historian Jim Garman will present a lecture on the history of Aquidneck Island trolleys where he will show many of the photos in his impressive collection.

Come learn about the Island Line that traversed the east side of Aquidneck Island, the power station in the Newtown section of Portsmouth and the car barn that was located near Child Street. Of note, the first electric trolley line was constructed in Richmond, Virginia in 1888. Newport received its first line in 1889 following the organization of the Newport Street Railway earlier that same year.

Oct 24th at 6:30 PM at the Historical Society Museum (870 E. Main Rd, at Union St) - $5 donation for non-members.  The 2nd Floor lecture hall is not handicap accessible, but the Society has plans for a 2nd Floor lift for which donations will be gladly accepted.
